What is possible when the earth fractures beneath you?

For many of us, recent political decisions have created chaos, a sense of despair and a feeling like the bottom is falling out from under us. And it very well may be. It’s possible that life as we know it will be forever destroyed.

But here’s what I know about being destroyed: it is possible for things – amazing things – to grow out of the fractures.

Maybe not at first.

First, we must name and honor what has been lost. We must allow ourselves to feel the sorrow that comes with it, be in the grief of it all.

This might take a while.

Then, we must notice what’s still here. What is left? What do we treasure that needs to be protected and nurtured? What are the ashes that we can build from?

Over time, new possibilities will emerge that would never have been possible without the devastation.

I am not a fan of how things are going in our country and in our world right now.

Yet, there is a way that we may find something better on the other side.

I cling to that.
